ABOUT SELFTAPE

mission

The original SELFTAPE studio with locations in West Hollywood and Sherman Oaks.  Our mission is to provide actors with the tools they need to thrive in the roles they want.

Here at SELFTAPE, we do our best to provide a full-service casting space for actors and productions.

If you’re an actor, you have the chance to work on your audition with professional actors and directors. During your selftape recording session, you will be provided with a reader, most of whom have worked on hundreds of tapes with our clients, as well as coaching, editing, and delivery to you and your team. We can also provide actors with reel editing and scene recovery services.

Productions for the screen and stage have a chance to rent out our West Hollywood location as a casting space. We will provide you with our full recording service, including a reader, camera, sound recording, editing of takes, and delivery.

Soon, our West Hollywood location plans to expand our services through The Miri theater, a 20’ x 30’ black box modular theater. The Miri will host classes, performances, or you will be able to rent it out for your own rehearsal, performance, or table read space.

Story

Originally called The Selftape Creative Studios, our studio was founded by Jason Montgomery after he ran the Los Angeles office of Casting Workbook and helped cast over 30 feature films at 20th Century Fox. In 2011, years before it became the industry norm, Jason saw selftapes as the future of casting. Well over a decade later, the studio has helped thousands of actors book roles, and it continues to be a safe, creative space for actors to thrive.

Today, SELFTAPE is run by award-winning filmmaker James Camali. James started his journey as a filmmaker as a high-schooler by attending summer programs at the New York Film Academy and studying acting under James Price in New York City. James received his BFA in Film from The School of Visual Arts. During his third year, James became one of the youngest Americans to direct a television movie while using the school’s equipment to produce and direct a made-for-tv Lifetime Movie. After his time at SVA, he shadowed the late great acting coach Wynn Handman. Under Wynn, James learned how to connect deeply with actors to get their best performances. James's recent feature film, The Mental State, won numerous awards on the festival circuit with reviews commending the performances across the board. He is set to direct his next feature, Followers, in the fall of '25.

Now, James hopes that he and the readers of SELFTAPE can continue Jason’s legacy of bringing the best audition out of each actor who walks through their doors.
